Snacking on chips and cookies? Then stop and replace with popcorn. Recent studies have shed light on the multiple health benefits of this delicious snack. There are whole grains, fiber and antioxidants wrapped up in this simple snack.

What are Whole Grains

Popcorn is naturally a whole grain and therefore provides the healthy benefits derived from the nutrients in every component of the whole grain. Whole grains include three components; the germ, the bran and the endosperm. The germ contains protein, healthy oils, vitamin E, many B vitamins and minerals. The bran houses most of the fiber found in whole grains alongside proteins, B vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The endosperm is primarily composed of starch with some protein and some fiber. Dietary fiber is a major benefit of whole grains.

Popcorn provides aprox 4 grams of dietary fiber for every 4 cups of popped corn. The majority of people only consume half of their recommended daily intake of fiber, which is 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men. An adequate fiber intake lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease, reduces blood cholesterol and can lower your risk of type 2 diabetes by regulating blood sugars.

In 2012 The University of Scranton reported a study that found the antioxidant concentration of popcorn to be much higher than anticipated. The study found the concentration of polyphenols in popcorn exceeded that of most fruit. This nutrient was found within the hull and so popcorn without the hull may not contain this healthy antioxidant. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, polyphenols enjoys numerous health benefits, as well as the prevention of degenerative diseases such cancer, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative diseases and diabetes.

Why do we eat popcorn in the theatre?

Why do we eat popcorn in the theatre?

Before we answer this question we need to look at the history of popcorn. Over 8,000 years ago maize was cultivated from a wild grass that does not resemble the modern day corn we are accustomed to today. This was called Teosinte. Popcorn is a name mostly associated with puffed kernels of corn–a strain of corn, characterised by especially starchy kernels with hard kernel walls. This structure helps internal pressure build up when placed over heat and was one of the first variations of maize cultivated in Central America. After popcorn made its way to the eastern part of North America, it spread rapidly. Eaters found the act of popping corn wildly entertaining, and by the mid eighteen hundreds, popcorn was prevalent enough to be included in the Dictionary of Americanisms.

Popcorn literally exploded onto the scene and was available at most entertainment sites including circuses and fairs. In fact ironically, there was really only one entertainment site where the snack was absent... the theatres. Movie theatres wanted nothing to do with popcorn as they were trying to duplicate what was done in real theatres having beautiful carpets and rugs hence didn’t want popcorn being ground into it. They aimed at the highbrow clientele and did not want any noise that snacking created during the films.

When films added sound in 1927, the movie theatre industry opened itself up to a much wider clientele, since literacy was no longer required to attend films (the titles used early silent films restricted their audience). Attendance to movie theatres grew to over 90 million per week creating larger possibilities for profits. Pictures with sounds now muffled the noise of snack eating –but movie theatre owners were still hesitant to bring snacks inside of their theatres.

The Great Depression presented an excellent opportunity for both movies and popcorn. Looking for a cheap diversion, audiences flocked to the movies. And at 5 to 10 cents a bag, popcorn was a luxury that most people were able to afford. Popcorn Suppliers bought their own popping machines and sold popcorn outside the theatres to moviegoers before they entered the theatre.

As more and more customers came to the theatre with popcorn in hand, theatre owners couldn't ignore the financial appeal of selling the snack leasing ‘lobby privileges ’ to vendors and allowing them to sell in the lobby of their theatre though more likely on a bit of street in front of the theatre for a daily fee.

 Eating Popcorn in theatres

Not before long, owners realised that if they cut out the middleman, their profits would rocket.  Eventually, movie theatre owners came to understand that concessions were their ticket to higher profits, and installed concession stands in their theatres.

By 1945 over half of the popcorn consumed in America was eaten at the movie theatres.
